- Hereford Cathedral School Chapel Choir
Hereford Cathedral School Chapel Choir was formed with the arrival of David R Evans as Director of Music at the School. The choir is 89 strong with females singing the soprano part, females and males singing the alto part and the tenor and bass parts sung by males. The choir is open to anyone in the school in year 9 or above, and no auditions are necessary. They have recently sung choral evensong in Gloucester Cathedral and are soon to make a CD. Members of HCS Chamber Choir are also members of the the chapel choir. This choir is around 20 strong and is directed by Neil R Moore who is the Assistant Director of Music. They have recently made it into the National Selection of BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year.
The Chapel Choir have apparently entered the Guinness Book of World records breaking the record number of times one choir has performed Brewer's Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in D and also Smith's Five-Part Responses.
David Evans
David Evans was previously Director of Music at Uppingham School and was responsible for the building of the school's £3.2m music school. He came to Hereford Cathedral School as Director of Music in September 2006, and since then has formed the Chapel Choir by amalgamating what was the Intermediate Choir, Male Voice Choir and Chamber Choir. The School Symphony Orchestra has continued to flourish and has performed Grieg's Piano Concerto and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.4 in Hereford Cathedral. In May 2007 the school performed a piece written by Deep Purple legend Jon Lord for massed choirs, orchestra, piano and tenor solo, stupendously sung by Jon Weller, Head of Music at HCJS 2002-07.
Future plans are to perform Wagner's Tristan und Isolde prelude, Villa Lobos's piece for soprano and 8 cellos and Vivaldi's Gloria with massed choirs from HCS and other schools!
The Choir
With 89 mixed sex members, the choir itself gives a wonderful sound when performing in Hereford Cathedral. The choir regularly performs in the Cathdral (hence the name!) for the whole school to enjoy. Evensong and specailst concerts are open to all audiences. Members have lots of fun when singing together and have two rehursals per week. For more information on the next up and coming concert, please contact Hereford Cathdral School.
