Richard George Clitherow

Richard George Clitherow (1909 - 1984) was the fifth Suffragan Bishop of Stafford [The Times, Friday, Mar 07, 1958; pg. 10; Issue 54093; col B "New Suffragan Bishop Of Stafford" Category: Official Appointments and Notices] . Educated at Dulwich College and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge [Who was Who 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] , he was ordained in 1936 and began his career with a Curacy at Bermondsey [ Crockford's clerical directory 1975-76 Lambeth, Church House, 1975 ISBN 0108153674] . When war came he became a Naval Chaplain [ During which he was mentioned in Despatches- The Times, Friday, Nov 16, 1984; pg. 18; Issue 61988; col G "The Rt Rev R.G Clitherow" Category: Obituaries] . From 1946 to 1958 he was Canon Residentiary at Guildford Cathedral before ascending to the Episcopate, a post he held until retirement 18 years later.
