Associated_acts =Tancredi Pasero (
January 11 ,1893 ,Turin -February 17 ,1983 ,Milan ) was an Italian bass. Particularly associated with the Italian repertory, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career largely based in his native country.After studying with the baritone Arturo Pessina in Turin, Pasero made his debut there, in 1917, as Ramphis in "
Aida ", although he always considered his official operatic debut to have taken place inVicenza , on December 15, 1918, as Rodolfo in "La Sonnambula ".Pasero went on to make guest appearances in London, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels and Buenos Aires. Although
La Scala , Milan, where he made his debut in 1926, would become his main artistic home, New York did get to hear him from 1929 until 1933, when he sang at theMetropolitan Opera . His roles at the Met included Oroveso, Raimondo, Miller, Ferrando, Fiesco, Padre Guardiano and Alvise.He also enjoyed considerable success in such
Wagner roles (sung in Italian) as Heinrich, Marke, Pogner, Hagen, Gurnemanz. He appeared, too, asMussorgsky 's Boris and participated in the first performances of several operas, notably,Mascagni 's "Nerone", in Milan, andPizzetti 's "Orseolo", inFlorence.Pasero retired from the stage in 1950. He was widely regarded as having one of the finest bass voices of his era, ranking with those of
Alexander Kipnis ,Mark Reizen andEzio Pinza . (Pasero's voice closely resembled Pinza's in its vibrancy and tonal qualities.) Pasero can be heard in five complete opera recordings; "Norma" (1937) and "La forza del destino " (1941), "Un Ballo in Maschera " (1943), and two of "Aida " (1928) and (1946). He also made recordings of individual opera arias which have been released on CD in recent times.Sources
