Stanley Grammar School

Stanley Grammar School was a school for boys and girls, located in the South Australian Clare Valley town of Watervale. It was opened in 1863 by teacher, educator and former temporary headmaster, Joseph Cole. The school was a two storey building and offered subjects in chemistry, assaying, surveying, linear and perspective drawing, brokerage discount and commission, book-keeping, and field subjects. The school also operated as a night school for some time.

Cole retired in 1904 and died in 1916. The school continued to operate until 1917, when it closed. Since that time, it was abandoned for almost thirty years, then sold at action. The building has operated as a restaurant and also as bed and breakfast accommodation. It has been placed on the "South Australian Heritage Register" and is now a classified, protected building.

Former students of the institution who went on to some prominence included Sir David Gordon, Dr. William Torr, Sir John Duncan, Dr. W. Jethro Brown and Emile Sobels.
