Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale

Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale

Bhaskar Raghunath Bakhale (1869 - 1922) was a Hindustani singer.

Judging by the diverse sources from whom he learned, he may be considered the most complete Hindustani Classical Singer, and the fame he had attained would justify the lofty billing.

Bhaskarrao Bakhale was a member of Kirloskar Natak Mandali and had acted the female role of Manthara in the drama Ram-Rajya-Viyog. Impressed by his talent, visiting musician Bande Ali Khan, one of the eariest exponents of Kirana Gharana, initiated him into classical music. Later Bhaskarbuwa learned under Faiz Mohammed Khan of Gwalior Gharana, Natthan Khan of Agra Gharana, and Alladiya Khan of Jaipur Gharana. He and his friend Govindrao Tembe composed music for Bal Gandharva's dramas: Manapman and Swayamwar. Bakhale's compositions in Swayamvar are famous more than 80 years after the drama was first performed.

Disciples

He wasn't particularly devoted to teaching and had a rather crude method of teaching. But he taught Bapurao Ketkar, Master Krishnarao, Bal Gandharva.

Shaila Datar, married to Bakhale's grandson Sudhir, has written a book which covers Buwa's life comprehensively.
