University of the Rockies (UoR) is a private graduate school located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As of February, 2008 the University offers three options in the Master of Arts in Psychology degree and two options in the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree. Graduate students may earn the PsyD degree in Clinical Psychology to become licensed clinical psychologists. Students who are pursuing a career in the field of consulting for business organizations may choose the non-clinical PsyD in Organizational Leadership. Master’s degree specializations consist of Marriage and Family Therapy, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Organizational Leadership.

The University’s parent organization, Bridgepoint Education, Inc., is a for-profit higher education company based in San Diego, California. University of the Rockies is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The University has also been granted Category I status as a degree-granting institution by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE). University of the Rockies is an associate member of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology. Finally, University of the Rockies has been approved to offer CE credit through the American Psychological Association (APA).

As of February, 2008 the University claims 38 full-time members in its faculty, and approximately 150 students.

Campus

Housed in an historical redbrick building which used to function as a train station, University of the Rockies is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with the plains to the east and Pikes Peak towering at 14,000 feet to the west. Views of the Continental Divide can be seen from the Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway.

History

University of the Rockies was founded June 18, 1998 as the Colorado School of Professional Psychology (COSPP), to provide a professional graduate education in psychology to individuals who seek licensure as psychologists or practice in other arenas of the profession. When Bridgepoint Education acquired COSPP in September, 2007, the name was changed to University of the Rockies. The Colorado School of Professional Psychology is now a School within the larger University of the Rockies.

University of the Rockies Press

University of the Rockies Press is a publishing enterprise of the University, which publishes and disseminates books on clinical psychology, religion and spirituality, business and organizational leadership, and health and well-being. As of February, 2008, there are two published books under UoR Press, and more are in the works.

Switzer Community Counseling Center

The Switzer Community Counseling Center, a non-profit organization, is located on campus and provides low-cost psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families who have no third-party insurance or have only a limited ability to pay. Students of UoR use the Center for on-site training. It provides psychotherapy services while allowing students to practice their psychotherapy skills and integrate their learning.
Located in Central Colorado Springs, the Center serves the region’s low income and homeless who are referred by shelters and agencies, as well as those at risk of becoming homeless.
The Counseling Center is named for Drs. Robert and Margaret Switzer, who initially funded its creation.
