St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Pattom, Trivandrum

St. Mary's Malankara Syrian Catholic Higher Secondary School Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, is a prestigious educational institution of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. It was founded in 1940 by Archbishop Mar Ivanios, who has been called the "Newman of India." It is part of history that Sri. C. P. Ramaswamy lyer, Diwan of the Princely state of Travancore declared open, has the classes from the preparatory to the sixth form.

Mar Ivanios envisioned this school to be model to other institutions. His successor, Arch Bishop Benedict Mar Gregorios, nurtured the development of this institution with care and concern. Late Major Arch Bishop and Catholicose Cyril Mar Baselios with his vision and foresight has encouraged the development of the institution to its present status. The spirit of academic excellence that prevails at the school has been fostered by its present patron Moran mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos of Thiruvananthapuram.

At the start of the school, 260 students were enrolled in the first batch. Mr. A. Sankara Pillai, a noted educationalist of the time, was the first Headmaster, who lead the school through its fledgling days. He was assisted by a team of eminent teachers who rendered their services to the institution that the school was greatly privileged to have been headed by a series to highly competent Headmasters and principals, who bequeathed a part of their educational vision to the glory of this institution.

In 1990, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary school celebrated its Golden Jubilee. The chief guest of the day the Governor of Kerala, his Excellency, B. Rachayya declared that St.Mary’s was a model to other institutions in Kerala. The way the school functioned the high record of academic excellence produced every year, were specially mentioned by his Excellency as ideals to be emulated by other institutions in Kerala.Today, it is gratifying to note that St.Mary’s school has a total strength of above 9000 students in classes V to VII, consisting of 186 divisions. This school claims to be the largest in Asia regarding the number of students. It is ably managed by 275 dedicated teaching faculty and 12 non-teaching staff under the leadership of Principal Fr. George Mathew Karoor.

Though the school is run by the Malankara Catholic Church, it provides education to students irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The pupils of this school distinguish themselves both on campus and in society their lofty and edifying character. The present leadership of the school shepherded by Moran Mor Baselios Cleemes Catholicose takes pains to keep the academic excellence and the moral, vision of education aloft.In the year 1998-99 the higher secondary section was added to the school.

At present there are 14 batches, 8 in science, 3 in humanities and 3 in commerce. The school which has a strength of 1400 higher secondary students, strives for high standard in transmission of knowledge, with a dynamic and interactive environment. Due to the effective broad based supervision and dedicated efforts of highly motivated and qualified teachers, St.Mary's Higher Secondary School is rated among the top Higher Secondary Schools in the state. It is also recognized for its outstanding track record in the board examinations.
