- Altus Lacy Quaintance
Altus Lacy Quaintance was an American naturalist, born Dec. 19, 1870 inNew Sharon (Iowa) and died on August 7, 1958 in Lake City (Florida).He received a Bachelor of Sciences at the Florida AgriculturalCollege at the University of Florida in 1893, a Master of Science fromthe Polytechnic Institute in Alabama in 1894 and at the same location,a Doctorate of Sciences in 1915. From 1894 to 1902, he taught biologyand entomology at the University of Florida and then to theagricultural experimental station of Georgia, and also as an entomologist atthe University of Maryland [ [http://www.entm.umd.edu/about/documents/Historyto1960s.pdf Microsoft Word - HistoryBissell.doc ] ] . In 1903, he was hired at the Department ofEntomology
USDA before doingresearch on insect pests of fruit trees in the new office ofentomology, a function that he retains until his retirement in 1930.
