International Master title in1984 and the Grandmaster title in1986 he was World under 16 Champion in1980 and European Junior Champion in1983 -84. He finished 1st= withAlexander Beliavsky in the1987 USSR Championship but lost the play-off match (+0, =2, -2) gaining the Silver Medal. At the 1988 USSR Championship he finished 3rd= withArtur Yusupov , behindAnatoly Karpov andGarry Kasparov .Salov qualified twice for the
