The Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway opened in full in 1881 [ [http://www.dukedog.co.uk/family%20tree.html dukedog-GWR family tree ] ] , being an amalgamation of Chipping Norton Railway and Bourton-on-the-Water Railway. The line from Kingham to Bourton-on-the-Water had opened in 1862. [Cite book

The whole line was formally absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1897 [ [http://www.signalbox.org/company.shtml Railway Companies and Contractors ] ] , although it had been run by the GWR since it opened.
