Longfellow was born in
Portland, Maine to Stephen and Zilpah (Wadsworth) Longfellow; he is the younger brother of poetHenry Wadsworth Longfellow . He attendedHarvard College and Harvard Divinity School, where his classmates includedThomas Wentworth Higginson andSamuel Johnson ; he would later collaborate with Johnson in his hymn-writing.
