The Zen Center of Los Angeles (ZCLA), temple name Buddha Essence Temple, is a Zen center founded by Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi in 1967 that practices in the White Plum lineage. Located in Los Angeles, California in an area prone to crime, by 1980 the center had more than two-hundred members and owned many of the homes and apartments in the surrounding neighborhood. Many of these residential buildings have Japanese landscape designs. [Maguire, 184] [Seager, 101] Jan Chozen Bays directed the ZCLA non-profit Medical Clinic, which provided basic care for members and low-income families or individuals in their surrounding area.
