Trabzonspor FC Seoul Şenol Güneş (born
1 June 1952 inTrabzon ) is a former Turkish footballer, and now a manager.He began his career at
Erdoğdu Gençlik , playing as a goalkeeper. He later moved onto theTrabzonspor amateur team, and began playing for the senior team soon after. He played for Trabzonspor for nine years, between 1975 and 1984. During this time he won six league championships and 31 caps for the national team, acting as captain on five occasions. He was part of the 'Trabzonpor Efsanesi' ('The Trabzonspor fable') team along with players like Turgay Semercioğlu, Necmi Perekli, and Ali Kemal Denizci.His management career started at Trabzonspor, where he was firstly assistant manager before being promoted. He came close to winning the championship in
1996 , after leading all season, but in the end his team came second. This year he also played in theUEFA Cup where his team was knocked out bySchalke 04 . He left the club soon after, and worked at other clubs, includingAntalyaspor . In2000 , he was hired to coach Turkey. Turkey qualified for the2002 FIFA World Cup and finished third. Güneş won theUEFA Coach of the Year award for2002 . After the World Cup he received many offers fromGreece ,Brazil andSpain but he wanted to stay with Turkey. After Turkey failed to qualify for Euro 2004, Güneş was sacked as manager.He returned to
Trabzonspor in January2005 , signing a three and a half year contract but left shortly afterwards following poor results. At this time there were rumours that Güneş would be taking a coaching job inIran or in theUnited Arab Emirates .On 8th December 2006,
FC Seoul , one of the leading football clubs in theK-League , announced their three-year contract with Güneş starting from 2007.Güneş is married and has two children.
