Meridel LeSueur (
February 22 ,1900 –November 14 ,1996 ) was an American writer and social activist, born as Meridel Wharton, she assumed the name of her mother's second husband, Arthur LeSueur, former Socialist mayor ofMinot, North Dakota . An occasional actor in films, she turned to the writing of children's books, notably, "The Story of Davy Crockett" and "The Story of Johnny Appleseed". She was blacklisted by theHouse Un-American Activities Committee for her membership in theCommunist Party . LeSueur was active in a variety of antiwar and left-wing causes and is commemorated inMinneapolis, Minnesota , in the Meridel LeSueur building host to the North Country Co-op.References
