- Léon Vaudoyer
Léon Vaudoyer (1803-1872) was a noted French architect. He was one of the "romantic" Beaux-Arts architects influenced by Saint-Simon and
Auguste Comte , along with his contemporariesFélix Duban ,Henri Labrouste , andLouis Duc .Vaudoyer was born in Paris, the son of
Antoine Vaudoyer , and won the GrandPrix de Rome in 1826. In 1838 he won the design competition for the hôtel de ville inAvignon (unrealized), and from 1845 onwards he (withGabriel-Auguste Ancelet ) enlarged the buildings of the Priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs (now theConservatoire National des Arts et Métiers ). In 1852 he was given responsibility for reconstructing theSorbonne (unrealized), and also for designing the polychrome Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure inMarseilles .Juste Lisch was his student.References
