The WTA Austria was a
WTA Tour affiliatedtennis event held annually from 1973–1998, with some periods of suspension. Four locations hosted the event:Kitzbühel , 1973–1977, 1979–1983, 1990–1993;Vienna , 1978;Bregenz , 1985–1986;Styria , 1994;Maria Lankowitz , 1995–1998. Women's tennis returned to Austria in 2007, with the creation of theGastein Ladies tournament.The event was held on outdoor clay for the duration of its existence. Upon its re-introduction to the tour in
1990 , it was classed in the Tier IV category of events; it was briefly elevated to a Tier III event in1993 before being brought down a tier again. Three Austrians won the singles event, all from 1995–1997:Judith Wiesner ,Barbara Paulus , andBarbara Schett . RomanianVirginia Ruzici holds the record number of singles wins, with her three victories coming in 1980, 1982, and 1985.Prize money
