Mandodari temple, Betki

The Mandodari temple is located in the village of Betaki, about 5 km from nearest town Marcel, Ponda, India. The temple is located at 15d 30'20, 82d N and 73d59'23d E at 81ft elevation. You can see it on Google Earth. Many people have a misconception about this temple from its name. This is a temple for the "gramdevata" or the village deity of Betaki. It is not a temple for Ravana's wife Mandodari. The word Mandodari has a meaning of Mand (water) + Udar (stomach) and it has a real story of how the village started worshipping this deity. It means someone who is born in the water. This temple is built to worship the great human being whose children were sacrificed in the past to ensure that this village has an everflowing stream of water.
