1858 Hietsu earthquake

The Nihongo|Hietsu earthquake|飛越地震|Hietsu jishin took place on April 9, 1858 (according to the old Japanese calendar, Ansei 5-2-26). It occurred on the Atotsugawa Fault, which connects Mount Tate in Toyama Prefecture and the Amō Pass in Gifu Prefecture on the island of Honshū in Japan. Its name includes one kanji from Nihongo|Hida|飛騨国 and one from Nihongo|Etchū|越中国, the names of the provinces that were in use at the time. The earthquake is estimated to have killed 200–300 people.
