“SPAKKA-NEAPOLIS 55” is a musical band from Naples.It was born in the 2000 and stands as the climax of the musical career of three Neapolitan musicians long engaged in the field of traditional Neapolitan music. Featuring the historic worker’s group “E Zezi”, Antonio Fraioli, Monica Pinto and Marcello Colasurdo, found “Spaccanapoli” and, in 2000, publish for Real World Records “Lost Souls – Aneme Perze”. A long series of international tours during which they achieve big success both of public and of critic . Highly appreciated in the in the whole Europe, Canada, America, Mexico, Jappon, because of the enthralling performances, the group has, in its artistic career, obtained remarkable professional and cultural response. The group springs from the consciousness of the complexity of Neapolitan oral tradition, which clashes with the languages of mass culture, proposing a music that represents a feasible dialogue between the expressions of modern culture and those of tradition.A course that leads to question about the way by which popular culture may interact with modernity and its languages, in an age where the different expressions of local cultures too often risk to disappear, also because they are impoverished by the simplification requested by the forms of mass-media. And it is in this context that “Spakka Neapolis 55” integrates itself, that is to say the choice of a group that means also by its name the up-to-dateness of the present (Spakka), the ancient cultural roots (Neapolis) and the world of tradition (55, that in the Neapolitan cabala represents “ a musica” [the music] !

The Group

Neapolis, the “new town” conceived by the Greeks since 470 b. C., boasts an history and a culture made by encounters and exchanges, conflicts, dominations, popular traditions and magic-religious syncretism that, interweaving with contradictions and with the different expression of modern uneasiness, make it one among the most complex and charming in the world. Deriving its name by the street that divides in two the ancient city centre of the modern town of Naples, and that with its by-lanes and the conspicuous historical-cultural stratifications represents symbolically its essence, SPAKKA-NEAPOLIS 55 springs from the need to express in the meantime the modernity of present, the roots of the past and the world of tradition. Starting from the consciousness of the idioms of tradition and from the respect of their cultural meaning, the band is the product of long time experience in musical area, tending to the research and to the practice of a cohabitation and a possible synthesis between the expressive language of the oral tradition of Naples, and the one bound to modernity. SPAKKA-NEAPOLIS 55 experiments a path meant to reflect also on the consequences of modern economic organization, and on what that this implies on both local and personal level.
