Slav Baboshin

Wiacheslav "Slav" Aleksandrovich Baboshin (alt. Baboshyn) is a Russian figure skater, coach and choreographer based in Australia.

Skating Career

Coached by Alexandr Treshov at the Spartak Club in Moscow, Baboshin and his partner Elena Volkova won the senior gold medals in ice dance at the 1973, 1974 and 1975 Russian Figure Skating Championships. From 1977 until 1987, Baboshin was a soloist with the Ukrainian Ballet on Ice based in Kiev, Ukraine, where he was also an assistant ballet master.

Coaching Career

Baboshin studied at the Government Sports Institute of Moscow, Russia, where he graduated with a Diploma in Physical Education and a Diploma in Figure Skating Coaching.

In 1988, Baboshin moved to Warsaw, Poland to coach figure skating. The following year he immigrated to Australia to coach at the IceWorld Acacia Ridge rink in Brisbane. [http://www.iceworld.com.au/] Baboshin later moved to Sydney to coach at the Blacktown Ice Arena, and since 1998 he has coached at Sydney's Macquarie Ice Rink. Baboshin’s notable students include the Polish national skating team, Tracey Damigella [http://tv.msn.com/celebs/celeb.aspx?c=305154] (Senior Ladies' gold medallist at the 1989 Australian Figure Skating Championships, 9th ranked lady at the 1989 United States Figure Skating Championships), Tamara Heggen (Senior Ladies' gold medallist at the 1991 and 1992 Australian Figure Skating Championships), and Chantal Loyer and Justin Bell (Senior Ice Dance gold medallists at the 1995 and 1996 Australian Figure Skating Championships). Several of Baboshin’s students have represented their countries at the World Figure Skating Championships.

Baboshin is the coach and choreographer of the 'Ice Storm' Theatre on Ice team, which placed first at the 2007 and 2008 Australian Masters Cup & Adult Interpretive competitions.

Choreography

Baboshin choreographed the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1995 World Junior Figure Skating Championships, held in Brisbane, Australia.

He has also choreographed the programs of numerous skaters, including Miriam Manzano (6-time gold medallist at the Australian Figure Skating Championships) and Nicholas Fernandez (member of the Australian national figure skating team), [http://www.owia.org/athletes.cfm?athleteID=54&x=6&y=9] as well as ice shows and exhibitions.
