Q-Sense

Q-Sense develops and markets research instruments based on the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with patented Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D) technology. Since 1999, when the first commercial system for measurements in liquid was launched, Q-Sense has become the leading supplier of acoustic resonator based instruments for molecular binding events taking place on various surfaces. Q-Sense instruments are found in over 25 countries world-wide and there are currently over 300 publications citing the use of the QCM-D technology.

Q-Sense AB was founded in 1996 by a group of researchers at the Department of Applied Physics, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, where QCM related research had been going on since the 1970s. The research group discovered and patented (1995) a whole new way of extracting mass and viscosity parameters for surface analysis in liquid, based on the quartz crystal microbalance.

By measuring both the dissipation (D) factor and the frequency (f), it became possible to analyse the whole chain of reactions that occur when a new substance is introduced to the surface of the quartz crystal. The new technique was called QCM-D (Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation monitoring).

Q-Sense offers complete turnkey systems so that customers get started quickly. Hands-on training and data evaluation support is included to make sure that users exploit the full potential of QCM-D.

The instruments determine, in situ and in real time, the mass and structure of molecular layers that form on the sensor crystal. Simultaneous measurements of both mass and structural properties give a thorough understanding of molecular adsorption and interaction under a variety of experimental conditions.
