Cookson was born in
Manchester . He turned professional with Manchester City in August 1923 before moving on to Chesterfield in April 1925. In August 1927 he joined West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £2500. Later in his career he played for Plymouth Argyle and Swindon Town before retiring in May 1938 to become a publican. He died inWarminster in 1970.References
