Dnipropetrovsk inUkraine .History
The Golden Rose synagogue was built 150 years ago in Dnipropetrovsk, in former times called Yeketerinoslav/Jekaterinoslaw/Екатериносла́в. In 1924 the building was used as a workers' club and a warehouse and above the portice a seal of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was located in place of the Magen David. In 1996 the building was returned to the Jewish community. In 1999 started the reconstruction, designed by a local Jewish architect, A. Dolnik. Frank Meisler, an Israeli artist, disigned the foyer, the prayer hall and the Holy Ark. There is a lobby of the synagogue, which is modern and light. There are various alcoves showing sacred texts and list donors.
About the entrance into the sanctuary is located a representation of golden roses, made by the Israeli artist Frank Meisler.
A small rotunda between the lobby and sanctuary is showing the first phrase of the Sh’ma Israel prayer. The first words of Sh'ma Israel in Hebrew are at left, but the first words in Russian are at right. The two versions continue around the rotunda until the last words in Russian and Hebrew meet on the opposite side. The doors to the Aaron haKodesh, made by Frank Meisler, are showing the Ten Commandments.
The Jewish community wanted to built adjacent to the synagogue a Jewish Museum called "Tkumah" (rebirth) used also as a community center with a library, soup kitchen, class-rooms and offices. The Director of the Jewish Community of Dnepropetrovsk is Vyacheslav Brez. The Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk is Shmuel Kaminetzky, who is also a leading member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine [http://www.fjc.ru/news/newsArticle.asp?AID=602742&did=80137&scope=3593&media=80052&NewsType=80052] [http://djc.com.ua/index.aspx?page=content&mnu=2&type=Religion&lang=en] [http://www.jafi.org.il/agenda/english/index33.asp] .
