Roman Tmetuchl (February 11, 1926 - October 1998) was a Palau political leader and businessman.citation|url=http://muse.jhu.edu/demo/contemporary_pacific/v012/12.1shuster02.html|title=Micronesia in Review: Issues and Events, 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999|journal=The Contemporary Pacific|volume=12|issue=1|pages=217-220|last=Shuster|first=Donald R] During World War II, he was recruited to work for the Kempeitai, the Empire of Japan's military police. [citation|editor-last=Petty|editor-first=Bruce M.|title=Saipan: Oral Histories of the Pacific War|contribution=I Worked for the Kempeitai|last=Tmetuchi|first=Roman|publisher=McFarland|isbn=0786409916|publication-place=Jefferson, NC] He later served in the Congress of Micronesia, and went into business, through which he amassed a fortune of US$35 million. He later served as Palau's chief negotiator on the discussions regarding the Compact of Free Association. Palau International Airport was renamed as the Roman Tmetuchl International Airport in his honor in a resolution by the Senate of Palau proposed by senators Reklai, Koshiba, Seid, Diaz, and Dengokl on April 11, 2006 and later passed on May 4 of the same year. The resolution stated that "The Roman Tmetuchl International Airport is a fitting name for Palau's international airport due to Mr. Tmetuchl's numerous years of valuable services he provided to the Republic and for the assistance he provided in developing the airport."
