Irwin Steingut

Irwin Steingut (October 19, 1891 New York City - 1952) was an American lawyer, businessman and politician.

Life

His father Simon Steingut was born in 1856 in Hamburg, and emigrated to the United States in 1873. He settled in New York City, and married Lena Wolbach who was born in Kiev. Simon's father Joseph Steingut was a banker in Hamburg. Irwin Steingut attended and graduated from Public School Nr. 19 in New York City. Then he studied law at New York University, and graduated in 1912. Afterwards he worked for a year as a reporter for Associated Press. In 1913, he entered his father's real estate business at 47 West Forty-Second Street, Manhattan.

On June 12, 1914, he married Rea Kaufmann (b. June 12, 1893 NYC). Their children were June Eleanor (b. August 12, 1917) and Stanley Steingut.

He was a Democratic member from Kings County of New York State Assembly from 1922 to 1952, was minority leader from 1930 to 1934 and 1936 to 1952, and was Speaker in 1935.

He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948. He was a member of the New York Democratic State Committee in 1936 and 1948.
