"Valse Triste" is a ballet made by
New York City Ballet balletmaster (subsequently balletmaster in chief)Peter Martins to Sibelius' eponymous waltz as well as his incidental music for a play written by Sibelius' brother-in-law and variously titled "Scene with Cranes" and "Kuolema (Death)", the crane being a symbol of death in Finnish literature.
