HMS Empire Cutlass

HMS Empire Cutlass

HMS "Empire Cutlass" was a merchant ship built in San Pedro, California by the Consolidated Steel Corporation, Wilmington, as "Cape Compass", launched 29 July 1943. She was converted to carry sixteen assault landing craft for the D-Day landings on June 6 1944.

On D-Day she carried the South Lancashire Fusiliers. She had near misses from 2 torpedoes and heavy shelling from Le Havre. A doodlebug exploded on her starboard side and she was crippled by two acoustic mines outside Le Havre. She was sent for repairs in Falmouth, England after which she was renamed and would eventually return to the United States Navy in 1947.
