Jai Singh Prabhakar of Alwar
- Jai Singh Prabhakar of Alwar
Jai Singh Prabhakar (14 June 1882-19 May 1937) was a Maharaja of the princely state of Alwar from 1892 to 1937. The only son of the previous ruler, Sir Mangal Singh Prabhakar Bahadur, Sir Jai Singh initially was noted as brilliant, erudite and charming; however, he was also cruel, a sadist, and profligate, deifying himself and using the wealth of the state for his own dubious needs. Whenever British inspectors arrived, he turned his charm on them to show that conditions in Alwar were quite good, despite whatever stories there may have been. As with all con men, Sir Jai was eventually brought to account for his crimes; a board of inquiry convened in 1933 found him guilty. Instead of deposing him, however, they exiled him from the state, stripped him of his powers and forbade him to set foot in Alwar again for as long as he lived. Sir Jai then went into exile in France and died at Paris four years afterwards, aged 54. He was succeeded by a distant relation, Tej Singh Prabhakar Bahadur.
