February 27 ,1831 -March 6 ,1913 ) was an American scientist and a professor of science atWisconsin University until 1835 , when he moved toRochester, N.Y. , and established a nursery business with business partnerMatthew Ewing . TheVacuum Oil Company was incorporated in 1866, after obtaining a patent for a new method of distillingkerosene in a vacuum that produced a high-quality lubricant.
