Johnstone inRenfrewshire . She went to school inGlasgow , then entered Leng and Co ofDundee (later incorporated intoD. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd ) where she trained as a journalist. During theFirst World War she served as a VAD.She began her career as a journalist, writing for "Scottish Field" and
The People's Friend , although during this period she also wrote a few books about antiques. She is best known, however, for her children's books about Alison and her brother Niall, based in the north-west of Scotland.
