- Friedhof Heerstraße
The cemetery
Friedhof Heerstraße lies inBerlin ,Germany , district ofCharlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It lies at the Trakehnerallee 1 ("Trakehner avenue No.1") beneath the Olympiastadion. The name is a little misleading today because it originally refers to the inhabitants of theVillenkolonie Heerstraße , for which this cemetery was created in 1921-24 around the Sausuhlensee ("Wild boar's lake"). The cemetery is 149,650 m ² large and created by the garden architectErwin Barth as aforest cemetery . Thechapel was constructed byErich Blunck . Today it is not original, because its original "oriental" style was to be seen from the1936 Summer Olympics . This view incurred Adolf Hitler and so he let decrease the tower. In 1948 the war-destroyed chapel was rebuilt in another variation. From the beginning this cemetery was open for all, Christians, Jews, Muslims and even suiciders. Because of its idyllic location on the lake it gathers many prominent people.
