C. K. Post Addiction Treatment Center

C.K. Post is an Alcohol and Substance Abuse treatment center located in Brentwood, Suffolk County, NY. Its building is located at the famous Pilgrim State Hospital. Its 28 day inpatient program and additional halfway house tries to aid in the arrest of addiction.

There are separate dorms for the women and men. There is space for 21 women and about 45 men. No interaction with the opposite sex is tolerated, even though daily classes are integrated. Smoking is prohibited and is grounds for discharge.

Many addicts are either mandated by the court systems, or come from jail or crisis centers such as Talbot house and New Hope.

Treatment Philosophy

The C. K. Post Addiction Treatment Center offers a program based on the understanding that alcoholism and other psychoactive substance dependencies are complex, treatable diseases with biological, psychological, and social aspects. Individuals suffering from these diseases often experience physical and medical problems, may have co-existing psychiatric disorders, and often have difficulty managing interpersonal relationships and finding and maintaining employment.

The C.K. Post ATC inpatient rehabilitation program is an intensive, highly structured program that offers individualized treatment based on a comprehensive assessment of the individual. Program services include individual and group therapy, educational and interactive sessions, recreational activities, and exposure to and participation in a variety of self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Discharge planning is considered to be a critical factor in assisting individuals in their recovery and therefore is addressed throughout treatment. No one is discharged without a plan that address their continuing treatment needs including the need for a supportive living environment.

Special Programming

Women's Program:

The core component of the Women's track is a multi-disciplinary treatment team based on the principles of "women treating women". Group therapy, individual therapy, and gender specific programming address the many issues that block women from accessing and benefiting from treatment and the unique needs and issues presented by women in treatment.

Criminal Justice Programming:

The C. K. Post ATC has developed unique relationships with Suffolk County Drug Court and Family Drug Court and continues to work closely with probation and parole. As nearly 50% of patients entering our program are involved with the criminal justice system, a unique and innovative group has been assisting these individuals in developing awareness of how their addiction is related to their legal difficulties and teaching them the skills to avoid future criminal activity.

Methadone Maintenance:

It is the policy of C.K. Post ATC to provide inpatient treatment to any addicted individual who can benefit from our services. For those individuals who are already enrolled in a Methadone Maintenance program and who are also in need of inpatient treatment, the ATC staff work closely with the staff of their Methadone Maintenance program. We do not provide detoxification services for those patients who wish to withdraw from Methadone, but we will adjust the dosages as necessary and appropriate.

Motivational Enhancement Group:

This innovative programming is provided to all patients in their first four days of treatment and has been very successful in helping individuals remain in treatment. The program offers intensive, individual attention that allows the person to verbalize their feelings and fears about being in treatment and assists them in working through these issues so they can fully participate in their treatment at C.K. Post ATC.

Family Education:

The Family Education Session and visiting takes place on Sunday afternoons. Significant others must attend the Family Education Session prior to visiting. The weekly education group assists family members and significant others in understanding the disease of chemical dependence and how it impacts on their loved one and the family. We also provide information on self-help groups for the family and information on referrals for obtaining professional assistance.

Vocational Readiness:

The C.K. Post ATC places emphasis on self-reliance and independence as opposed to dependence. The patient's ability to work is assessed and addressed in the treatment and discharge planning process. Special programming has been designed to help prepare them for obtaining work or returning to work through interactive work groups, role-playing, identifying work skills, and assistance in filling out job applications and preparing a resume.
