medical anddental colleges inIndia . It is attached to theB.Y.L. Nair Charitable hospital , a 1,300-bedtertiary care center established in1921 .The Institute is currently headed by Dr. Sanjay Oak, a
pediatric surgeon , and employs a number of medical,paramedic al and support staff. It is run by the local municipal body (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ).History
It holds a special place in the history of the city as being the first hospital to be made and run by Indians under the
British empire . The other two big hospitals in the city at the time,KEM andSir JJ hospital , were both managed by the British.It has graduation courses in medicine,dental,physiotherapy,occupational therapy & (audiology, speech therapy).it was named as National Medical college and was inaugarated by Mahatma Gandhi & Sarogini Naidu.Alexander Fleming , who discovered Penicillin has also visited the medical college.It has postgraduation corses in various disciplines .It has superspeciality courses in disciplines like cardiology ,nephrology , neonatology, gastroenterology,cardiosurgery,neurosurgery,neurology.
