Carlos Sevilla was born in San Francisco,
California , and entered theSociety of Jesus , more commonly known as the Jesuits, in 1953. He studied atGonzaga University in Spokane,Washington , from where he obtained his Master's degree in Philosophy.Sevilla was ordained to the priesthood on
June 3 ,1966 , and made his solemn profession as a Jesuit onApril 22 ,1974 . He also earned his Master's in Theology fromSanta Clara University , and furthered his studies at theJesuitenkolleg inInnsbruck and Catholic Institute of Paris.On
December 6 ,1988 , Sevilla was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco and Titular Bishop of "Mina" byPope John Paul II . He received episcopal consecration onJanuary 25 ,1989 from Archbishop John Quinn, with Bishops Mark Hurley and Michael Kaniecki, SJ, serving as co-consecrators.He was later named the sixth Bishop of Yakima, Washington, on
December 31 ,1996 . Sevilla is the second religious and the first Jesuit to hold that office.Within the
