York High School is a secondary school in York, North Yorkshire, England which was formed in 2007 by the merger of Oaklands School and Lowfield School. It currently occupies temporary buildings on the existing Lowfield site on Dijon Avenue, but will move to new buildings on the former Oaklands site in January 2009 [cite web|url=http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/mostpopular.var.1658023.mostviewed.york_high_school_ready_for_return_of_pupils.php|title=York High School ready for return of pupils|date=2007-09-01|accessdate=2008-02-19|publisher=The Press] . The school is a specialist sports college.

The name of the school was chosen after a vote by pupils at the schools and the local community [cite web|url=http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/search/display.var.942080.0.10m_merger_unveiled_as_york_high_school.php|title=£10m merger unveiled as ‘York High School’|date=2006-09-28|accessdate=2008-02-19|publisher=The Press] However, controversy was aroused amongst many students due to the limited choice they had gained in naming the school; the choice being between naming it 'York High School' or prefixing it 'West York High School'Fact|date=June 2008. Further controversy amongst the student population, with respectable staff support was aroused by many school policies, including the merger which formed the school.

The school motto is 'Inspiring People; Achieving Excellence.'

Dijon Avenue Fire

Between 5-6am on the morning of Friday 3rd October 2008, a third of the school buildings on the Dijon Avenue site were burnt down in a fire [cite web|title=School badly damaged in huge fire|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/7649897.stm|date=2008-10-03|accessdate=2008-10-03|publisher=BBC News Online] . Students where given the day off and local residents where advised to stay away from the site.
