The term Candacate refers to the institution of the or Kandake (also known as Candace) pronounced "Kan-dah-kay". The Candace was a Queen regnant, queen mother or Queen consort of the Kushite Empire.

Famous Candaces

The most famous women to hold the title of Candace include Amanitore, Amanikatashan, and Amanishakheto. During the war between the Romans and the Kushites in the time of the candace Amanirenas, she led the African armies. After five years the brutal war ended in a truce.
