El Taller de Gráfica Popular

Founded in 1937 by artists Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O’Higgins, and Luis Arenal, El Taller de Gráfica Popular – initially called the Taller Editorial de Gráfica Popular (TGP) – organized artists concerned with making the visual arts publicly accessible and of concern to the working classes. Its founders were building of a rich tradition of printmaking in Mexico, and created a space where artists could collaborate and produce art that was politically and socially critical, particularly of the rising threat of fascism. Still functioning today, the TGP is perhaps best known for its extensive production of prints during its initial 40 years of activity. Since its inception various artists both within Mexico and from abroad have utilized its facilities, including many Chicano and African American artists from the U.S.
