George Curtis (footballer born 1939)

George Curtis (born 1939) was an English football player and manager.

Playing career

Curtis started his career with Snowdown CW before signing for Coventry City in October 1955. As club captain, the centre-half led the Sky Blues from the Fourth Division to the First. He left in December 1969, having played a club record 487 games (a record now held by Steve Ogrizovic and scoring 11 goals.

His next club was fc|Aston Villa for whom Curtis helped to win the 1971-72 Third Division title.

Management career

Following his playing career, Curtis became Commercial Manager at Coventry in July 1974 and then Managing Director in September 1983.

Curtis managed Coventry City between April 1986 and May 1987. It was he and John Sillett who guided Coventry to the FA Cup in 1987. That was, and remains, the club's only major trophy to date in its 125 year history.
