Exosite

Exosite

An exosite is a secondary binding site, remote from the active site, on an enzyme or other protein. [ [http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bsc/jth/2007/00000005/00000010/art00013 IngentaConnect Manipulation of thrombin exosite I, by ligand-directed covalent m ] ]

This is similar to allosteric sites, but differs in the fact that, in order for an enzyme to be active, its exosite typically must be occupied. [ [http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/isth2003/abstract.asp?id=9231 Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis ] ] Exosites have recently become a hot topic in biomedical research as potential drug targets.
