Angela Christine Smith (born 16 August 1961, Grimsby) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom.

Early life

She grew up in Grimsby, where her grandfather had been the Mayor. She went to Waltham Leas Primary School (now [http://www.leasinfants.ne-lincs.sch.uk The Leas Junior School] ) on "Manor Drive" in Waltham and [http://www.tollbarbec.co.uk Toll Bar Secondary School] in New Waltham, Lincolnshire. She joined the Labour Party at the age of 16. She worked for the NHS for five years. She studied English at the University of Nottingham in September 1987. She started a PhD at Newnham College, Cambridge. She was an English lecturer at Dearne Valley College in Wath upon Dearne from 1994 until 2003. She was a councillor on Sheffield City Council for 10 years for the Broomhill ward. She is a member of Amicus.

Parliamentary career

At the 2005 general election she was elected Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hillsborough. She has also worked hard to try and get the reinstatement of the former Woodhead Line between Hadfield and Penistone. Mrs Smith is one of 71 MP's who have signed a petition to re-open the transpennine route.

In 2007 she was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary and chief aide to Yvette Cooper.

10p tax rate

Initially, Angela C Smith MP praised the budget containing the abolition of the 10p tax rate as one which would "help hard pressed families". [ http://www.angelasmith-mp.org.uk/news_view.asp?id=156 ] As it became apparent that abolishing the 10p tax rate was unpopular, Angela C Smith MP, threatened to resign. She changed her mind again after re assurances from the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, convincing her to remain. [ Channel 4 News 17/4/08 ]

Personal life

She married in 2005, and lives in Stannington which will be apart of Sheffield Hallam Constituency at the next General Election.

She has a step daughter.
