A. Vijayaraj, popularly known as Vijayakanth ( _ta. விஜயகாந்த்), born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India on August 25, 1952, is a popular Tamil film actor and politician. His ancestry being settled in Andhra Pradesh, his family later moved to Tamil Nadu before his birth. He is well known for his patriotism and philanthropy. He is the founder of DMDK and the MLA of Vridachalam.

Personal background

Vijayakanth was born as A. Vijayaraj Naidu on August 25 1952 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. His parents are Sri. K.N. Alagarswami Naidu and Smt. Aandal who hailed from most prominent Balija Naidu family. He married Premalatha on January 31, 1990 and has two sons with her, Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. He is nicknamed 'Captain', as he has starred in a popular movie called "Captain Prabhakharan". "Captain Prabhakharan" was commercially successful and Vijaykanth's 100th film.Of late he has stopped accepting offers from other producers and is also keen in acting on his own banner films.

Film Career

Vijayakanth has given Blockbuster hits like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley,Vaidegi Kathirundal,Thavasi, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vaanaththaepole , Kannupada Pokuthayya, Arasangam and Ramana.He was considered as the third major star in Tamil films after Kamal Haasan and Rajni Kanth in Eighties and Earlier Nineties.He is instrumental in giving break to actor like Manzoor Ali Khan and Supreme Star Sarath Kumar.He has a very large fan base mainly in B and C centres.His Action Fims dubbed into Telugu often does good business.He has a peculiar style of fighting especially with his leg kicks which is very popular among fans. His famous dialogue from the film Narasimma 'Currenta thotta sadharna manishan thaan shock adikum. ana na Narasimma. Narasimmava thota currentuku thaan shock adikum' is also very popular.Vijayakanth is the only leading actor from Tamil Film Industry who has done only Tamil Films in his entire filmography of 150 Films. Moreover he has the habit of giving break to New directors.After a string of Average films, Arasangam , Vijayakanth's 150th film has been already declared as Super Hit. His next venture directed by Vikraman co starring Meera Jasmine has already became a surebet for distributors. Vijayakanth is also acting in a film called Engal Aasan now.

Political career

He formed Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, a regional political party in Tamil Nadu. He formally announced party formation on September 14, 2005 at Madurai. His party contested in all 234 seats in 2006 assembly elections and won one seat contested by him.
