- Richard Hoppin
Richard Hallowell Hoppin (Feb. 22, 1913 - Nov. 1, 1991) was an American
musicologist .Hoppin received his BA from
Carleton College in 1936 after spending two years at theParis "Ecole Normale de Musique". He studied atHarvard University , obtaining his MA in 1938, and taught atMount Union College from 1938 to 1942. After serving inWorld War II he returned to Harvard, completing his Ph.D. in 1952. From 1949 to 1961 he taught at theUniversity of Texas , and from 1961 atOhio State University .Hoppin's scholarship dealt primarily with
medieval music ; he specialized in theMusic of Cyprus in the 14th and 15th centuries. He published "Medieval Music" in 1978, which is a standard English-language work in the field.Books
