Radiance Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay

Radiance is the Annual Technological Festival organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Mumbai, (India).

Motivation

Radiance is held every March over a period of two days on the IIT Bombay campus. Radiance started off on a small scale in 2007 with the aim of providing a platform for interaction between the students, faculty and the industry. Radiance has witnessed participation from various technical institutes and companies from across India. It includes exhibitions, workshops, competitions, research project presentations (Vaigyaniki), lectures by eminent personalities and much more.

The motive of the event is to provide a platform for binding and exchange of thoughts among different engineering communities related to Mechanical Engineering. It aims to bridge the gap between the industry and academia by encouraging exchange of ideas and providing opportunities for technical interactions.

The Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) is a forum where the students and faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay and people from industry interact with each other, thus paving the way for new technological breakthroughs. Since its inception, more than three decades ago, MEA has organized a wide spectrum of events and competitions, including guest lectures, industrial visits and workshops, all of which have been well received by both industry and academia. During this period, MEA has had the privilege of a nationwide audience and the patronage of big corporate houses. Radiance is the annual festival of Mechanical Engineering department of IIT Bombay organized by MEA.

Overview Radiance 2007

Radiance in its pioneering year 2007 has proved to be a great bridge between industry and academia. The lecture series by eminent personalities like Prof. Amitabh Ghosh (ex-director of IIT Kharagpur), Mr. Kamlesh Pande (Vice-president of R&D and innovation at Thermax Ltd, Pune), Mr. Harshwardhan Gupta (Neubauplan – Design of Machines) and more were well received and widely appreciated. The exhibitions staging the machines developed by students gave a wonderful platform to both the audience and the presenters, to interact and discuss about the technology. Other exhibitions include naval exhibition, rapid-ex, and research exhibition. Students from all over India showcased their research projects and innovative products and competed in Vaigyaniki. Competitions like Industry Defined Problem provided a chance for students to work on real life technical problems faced in the industry. Competitions like Cann-quiz and Mech-GRE test the basic concepts of students. Micro-machining workshop provided valuable skills to both the students and the professional participants. The event had a participation of over 35 corporate houses, 100 faculty members in addition to over 700 students.
