In 1997, LaKritz accepted a position with the prestigious
Washington, D.C. law firm of Baker Donelson, where he became the youngest member of the firm's boutique China practice, which included formerU.S. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger and formerWhite House Chief of Staff andU.S. Senate Majority Leader ,Howard H. Baker .In 2001, at age 28, he was appointed by President
George W. Bush to be Special Assistant and Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of theUnited States Treasury , a senior-level U.S. economic position. At the U.S. Treasury, LaKritz played a central role in directing U.S. international economic policy towards China, India and the Middle East. He also represented the U.S. Treasury at theWorld Economic Forum in 2002,Harvard 's Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century, and during the 2001 and 2002 annual meetings of theWorld Bank , theInternational Monetary Fund , and theAsian Development Bank .
