Ettlingen is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is about 8km south of the city of Karlsruhe. After Bruchsal, Ettlingen is the second largest city in the Karlsruhe Landkreis.

Geography

Ettlingen sits at the northern edge of the Black Forest. The Alb River runs out of the hills of the Black Forest and into the Rhine Valley at Ettlingen. The central part of the city is in the Rhine flood plain, its outlying districts, especially to the west and north, are in the low hills that form the beginning of the Black Forest.

History

Ettlingen was an important crossroads during Roman times. This is demonstrated by the many artifacts found in the area, as well as the Neptunstein which commemorates a flood of the Rhine in Latin. The city was first documented in 788 as "Ediningom" in an announcement of the Monastery in Wissembourg in Alsace. In 965, the village of Ettlingen (Ediningom) received market rights (Marktrecht) from Emperor Otto the Great. In 1192, Ettlingen was raised to city status in the German Empire by Heinrich VI one of Friederich Barabarossa's sons. The Margrave Hermann V of Baden became Ettlingen's feudal lord in 1219. In the following years it became an independent city in the Margravite of Baden-Baden.

During the Nine Years War the city was nearly completely burned to the ground by the troops of Louis XIV, it was however rebuilt. After the Catholic line of Baden-Baden died out in 1771, Ettlingen became Lutheran under the Margravite of Baden-Durlach. The Margrave of Baden became an Elector in 1806 and a Grand Duke in 1806.

Ettlingen remained an independent city until 1937 when it was incorporated into the Karlsruhe Landkreis. Since then, Ettlingen has been a part of the Karlsruhe Landkreis.

Rheinland Kaserne

Ettlingen is the location of Rheinland Kaserne. Formerly a German Army base, for many years after World War II Rheinland Kaserne was the home of several U.S. Army units and many Americans who remember Ettlingen fondly. In the mid-nineties, the U.S. Army handed the kaserne back over to Germany. The kaserne is now home to a private school, medical offices, new housing and the Kulisse movie theater.

One of the U.S. Army units which called Rheinland Kaserne home was the 78th Engineer Battalion.
