Lonnie Hillyer (March 25, 1940,
Monroe, Georgia - July 1, 1985,New York City ) was an Americanjazz trumpeter, strongly influenced byDizzy Gillespie .Hillyer moved with his family to
Detroit at age three, and began studying music at 14 underBarry Harris . In 1960, he moved toNew York , where he played withCharles Mingus ,Yusef Lateef , andClifford Jarvis . Hillyer's association with Mingus lasted more than a decade.In 1966, he and
Charles McPherson formed a quintet.He died of
cancer in 1985. His son, Lonnie Darryl Hillyer, is a rock bassist.References
