Kris MacFarlane

Kris MacFarlane

Kris MacFarlane (born October 24, 1975 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian freelance drummer. He is best known for his work as the touring and recording drummer for Canadian folk band Great Big Sea. In addition to playing the drums, Kris is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He currently lives in Westville, Nova Scotia.

Career

Kris got his first break when he was asked to sing and play drums in a theatre production of "Dream a Little Dream: The nearly true story of the Mamas and the Papas" starring original "Papa" Denny Doherty. He was a member of the cast for it's six original runs. Kris spent two years touring with Lennie Gallant (appearing on his "Lifeline" album), then one year on the road with Dave Gunning (He has played on all of Gunning's recordings since). Vancouver world music band The Paperboys hired Kris to tour sporadically for two years (He appears on the JUNO nominated CD "Postcards") followed by Cape Breton Celtic group Kilt. Upon completing his last run with Doherty in 2001 and taking some time off Kris was approached to work with Great Big Sea. Kris has played on the Great Big Sea albums "Something Beautiful", "The Hard and the Easy", "Fortune's Favour" and The live concert DVD "Courage and Patience and Grit". Although pictured on the cover of the "Great Big DVD", the featured concert was filmed in 2001 prior to Kris joining Great Big Sea and thus features drummer Gavin Brown who played on the "Sea of No Cares" CD.

Additional artists Kris has worked with include: Beyond Ash, Barry Canning, George Canyon, Dave Carroll, Patricia Conroy, Crush, Janelle Dupuis, Paul Lamb, Doris Mason, Slainte Mhath, Sons of Maxwell, Nathan Wiley and Hawksley Workman.

Gear

Kris currently has endorsements with Yamaha Drums and Hardware, Sabian Cymbals, Roland Corporation, Garrison Guitars and M-Audio.
