Emir Abdul Madzhid is the militant leader of the Shariat Jamaat of the Caucasian Front in the Second Chechen War, in the volatile southern Russian republic of Dagestan. He was the deputy of Rappani Khalilov until his death in September 2007. He was then appointed the new leader of the Shariat Jamaat by the orders of Dokka Umarov.

Early militant activity

According to Kavkaz Center, Abdul Madzhid began his wartime career during the Second Chechen War where he fought in volunteer units under Aslan Mashkadov and Ibn al-Khattab which helped legitimize himself as a rebel leader in Dagestan with both Chechen rebel leaders and foreign rebel leaders. He also trained in camps run by Ibn al-Khattab where he learned various rebels tactics. After fighting many battles in Chechnya and gaining the support of top Chechen rebel leaders, he decided to go back to his home country of Dagestan to fight the Russians and join Shariat Jamaat where he became good freinds with Rappani Khalilov and where he quickly gained notoriety in the rebel ranks as a charismatic commander and expert in gurellia warfare . Leader of Dagestani insurgency

After Rappani's death, Madzhid was appointed the new leader of the Shariat Jamaat on the orders of Dokka Umarov, former president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and the current leader of the Caucasus Emirate. He was credited for bringing order to the resistance cells spread across the republic right after Rappani's death, and receive the oaths of fealty from the many various detachments of the Shariat Jamaat. Madzhid also repeated his and Shariat Jammats oath to only attack security and military targets and to avoid civilian deaths at all cost, much like the commitment his two succesors Makasharipov & Khaliov made. Even though he was born in Dagestan, Madzhid is closely connected with the men who are fighting in the borderlands of Chechnya, which makes it possible for him to find support among the Chechens and gives him an advantage in his new role as Jamaat leader.
