railroad=Trenitalia The FS class 491/2 were an Italian electric 25kV 50hz AC locomotives built during the 1980s by the "TEAM" (Trazione Elettrica Alternata Monofase) consortium, formed by
FIAT ferroviaria,Ansaldo and other companies. The lines of the train were designed by Italian designerGiorgetto Giugiaro .Group E491 was designed to be used on freight trains (max speed 140 km/h) while E492 was designed for fast passenger trains (max speed 160 km/h). They were intended to be used on the rail lines of
Sardinia , at the time subject of future electrification. The project was later abandoned, but a lot of units had already been ordered and built, and since the catenary on the mainland is mostly 3kV DC (except for high speed lines), and the locomotive was only able to run on 25kV AC, the group never entered into active service. FS have tried to sell them to foreign railways (France andBulgaria ), but never succeeded. At the moment, both groups are retired in various locomotive depots and are probably beyond any possibility to run again. On 6 February 2008 an invitation to tender for the sale of 25 locos in 5 lots was issued with a tender date of 21 April 2008 [ [http://www.gare.trenitalia.it/ferrovie/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=5913a89c583f7110VgnVCM1000001c42fe0aRCRD Tender on Trenitalia site (in Italian)] ] .
