website_name = Shene School HomepageShene School is a state secondary in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is at present a 6-form entry school with a multi-cultural pupil roll of just over 900. Uniform is mandatory. The school's motto is: “Enrich the Time to Come” and the school crest is a deer surmounted by a globe.
It is one of three Richmond schools at present in consultation about adopting Academy status. Shene's sponsor will be Edutrust, a non-profit making organisation and, when the consultation process - which will take on board the views of local parents - is completed, Shene will be on course to adopt Academy status by September 2009.
Performance
As a result of unsatisfactory attainment over several years, Shene's last Ofsted (Sept 2007) gave the school Notice to Improve. However, during the last year, under the new Headship of Lesley Kirby and her Leadership team, the school's overall examination results have improved by 12%, meeting Ofsted targets and lifting the school above Government's floor targets for 5 A* - C. A subsequent Ofsted re-visit showed that the school and its pupils, described as a capable student body, were satisfactorily on course to achieving further improvement. Both the Leadership team and the Governing Body were deemed strong by the Ofsted inspectors. The full report can be accessed online on the school's website.
tudent Behaviour
The behaviour of the students outside school and at local bus stops has caused concern in the past among local residents. But because of recent work with the East Sheen Safer Neighbourhood Team and London Transport's Safer Routes to School initiative, the school - one of three selected nationally - has just been awarded the School Travel Project Certificate. This certificate of merit highlights the school's strong educational ties with local police and the ensuing teamwork which has measurably improved the school's external social behaviour.
History
Richmond County School
In the latter part of the nineteenth century there was no reasonable secondary education in Barnes and Richmond for miles around except for those who could afford private tuition or send their children many miles to school. In the most populous areas of
Surrey , (eg Sutton, Wimbledon and Richmond) parents were for the most part obliged to be content to give their children an Elementary education. Richmond County was to be one of a series of new Technical Buildings erected or being erected by the county council in the seven principal towns of the county. The school was completed in two stages: the first stage, the major part of the school in 1896, and the second stage, the new south wing in 1901.
